Former President Donald Trump called Liz Cheney “one of the dumber people in politics” as the Republican former congresswoman campaigns for the Democratic ticket ahead of November.
Cheney, who represented Wyoming’s at-large congressional district, has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. The former U.S. representative began distancing herself from Trump while still in office, including by serving on the January 6 House committee tasked with investigating the siege on the U.S. Capitol waged by supporters of the former president. The panel eventually recommended that a criminal investigation should be launched pertaining to Trump’s actions surrounding the attack.
Trump has long assailed Cheney, who lost her reelection bid in 2022 to a Trump-backed Republican. In a post to Truth Social on Friday afternoon, Trump also directed his insults toward Cheney’s father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has also endorsed Harris for president.
“Has Liz Cheney, one of the dumber people in politics, ever looked at the horrible statements she’s made about Lyin’ Kamala Harris?” Trump wrote in the post.
“Every view and policy is the exact opposite of what Cheney and her equally ridiculous father, who got us into the never ending Wars in the Middle East, have stated over the years,” the former president added. “They’re being posted all over the internet, and Cheney looks even dumber than I thought she was—But I still say Kamala is worse!”
Newsweek reached out to the Harris campaign via email for comment on Friday.
Harris has garnered endorsements from several Republicans, including more than 100 former Congress members and national security officials who have said that the former president is “unfit to serve again.” Dick Cheney said in his endorsement of Harris that “there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.”
Liz Cheney joined Harris as part of her Midwest campaign tour this week, including speaking before supporters at a Harris rally in Ripon, Wisconsin, on Thursday. The former congresswoman was met with cheers from the crowd, who chanted as she spoke, “Thank you, Liz.”
During her speech, Cheney made a dig at Trump while speaking about her status as a high-profile conservative leader for decades, telling supporters: “I was a Republican even before Donald Trump started spray-tanning.”
Trump raged about the comment over Truth Social later Thursday, writing that Cheney is “pathetic” and has a “low IQ.”
“Her father, Dick, was a leader of our ridiculous journey into the Middle East, where Trillions of Dollars were spent, millions of people were killed—and for what? NOTHING!” Trump added in the post. “Well, today, these two fools, because the Republican Party no longer wants them, endorsed the most Liberal Senator in the U.S. Senate, further Left than even Pocahontas or Crazy Bernie Sanders—Lyin’ Kamala Harris,” the 2024 Republican presidential nominee added.
